Commercial real estate data firm CoStar has filed seven lawsuits, including one in Texas, against people who the company says gained unauthorized access to CoStar’s online service. The company’s CEO in April told investors that the company was prepared to sue people who were using its system without paying; he estimated at least 10,000 people were using CoStar’s services illegally, likely through shared passwords.
When I was last on CoStar’s service, they had protection to prevent the use of shared passwords. What did the change? You had to have a separate password for each device you used to login from.
Yeah, this one is a no-brainer. Even MLS kicks you out of any computer you are logged into when you log on at another location. While that’s not completely fool-proof, I’m not sharing my password with someone that could knock me offline while I’m sitting in front of a client, or doing a detailed search.
